Schools Should Change the Food They Serve
By: Trevan S.
Wow! Obesity is the #2 cause of death. If this is true I think all schools should
change the food they serve. This should be done because students may become obese, school food is unhealthy and full of sugar and fat, and if schools change their eating habits so will the kids
In 2009 USA Today reported that obesity is the #2 cause of death and almost 197,000 people died from it. 4,398 of those people were kids from the age of 10 to 16. That is why the first reason why I think schools should change the food they serve is because students may become obese. The food served at any school is most likely very unhealthy. Even salad, wraps, and sandwich’s are extremely unhealthy. All of these unhealthy foods leave kids to being able to only pick them and that will eventually cause obesity.
The second reason why schools should change the food they serve is because the food is unhealthy and full of sugar and fat. The drinks that schools serve are loaded with sugar. The drinks that have the most sugar are Izzies, milk, apple juice, and orange juice. There are also many foods with tons of fat. The highest in fat are chicken nuggets, hamburgers, french fries, and pizza with a combined total of 612 grams of fat! That is the equivalent to 5 large french fries from McDonalds®. According to Food Digest Magazine one salad served at any school has the equivalent calories to 3 salads from Subway®.
The final reason why schools should change the food they serve is because if they change their food choices so will the kids. Kids want an example, and that could easily be their school. So if schools change the food they serve students will change the food they eat. If students change from unhealthy foods to healthy foods they have a very slim chance of becoming obese and if all kids weren’t obese there wouldn’t be as many deaths caused by it.
As you can see all schools across the country should change the food they serve even if it is already a little bit healthy. They should do this because students may become obese if they keep the food the same, the food is unhealthy and full of sugar and fat, and students will change their eating habits if school food is healthy.
